More road trip pics! There are so many beautiful abandoned buildings, houses, junkyards--places where time has stood still for a decade or four. It's a special thrill--finding something that has been forgotten. Maybe it stems from our childhood on the farm, spent hanging out in barns full of old junk. Climbing on shit and running wild where we were told not to play.
So, when we spotted this abandoned beauty in Arkansas, I almost flipped the minivan whipping into the overgrown, dirt driveway. The door was locked, so we circled the wraparound porch to the other side. The second door was conveniently cracked open. Much to our excitement, a tree trunk stood in the middle of this one-room, two story house. Tree houses were a theme along this trip. A dream come true for a couple tree-lovers like us. The walls were covered with hand-painted mountains and lakes, similar to the scenes we would find along this journey. A thick layer of dust covered the few pieces of dining room furniture that remain in the upstairs of this whimsical little home. The whole thing was picture-perfect.
I wish I had more photos of my grandparents' backyard that's been paved over, or the Cardinal store where I spent so many afternoons grocery shopping with my grandma. They had those weird tall carts you could sit underneath, and all the Teen Beat magazines. Why do I care about remembering this shit? I guess I'm just that kind of person. I'm not trying to encourage trespassing, but there are too many special places in this world that may crumble before we get back to them. They deserve to be documented and remembered. If you find yourself in a beautiful place, where time is standing still, take a photo. It won't be there forever. I would have to say my only regrets are photos I didn't take.
Paige didn't feel like modeling, so she got behind the camera at this stop. She has assisted me on photo shoots, and acted as a second shooter during a wedding, but she only recently started shooting on manual mode. Watching her grow an eye for photography has been fun for me. Especially since she claims to have no artistic abilities. Ha! I believe everyone is born to create something original. Some people just have to experiment to find their outlet. And they might need a little nudge.
Here's to exploring, experimenting and capturing beautiful moments before they're gone.
